Urban Future Lab invited to discuss how the future of mobility can transform the city

Dr. Antonio Petrov, Founder of the Urban Future Lab, will discuss how the future of mobility can transform the city as an invited panelist in the discussion “Future Mobility: Beyond Cars, Trucks, and SUVs.” The San Antonio Startup Week event takes place at 11:30am Wednesday, October 23, 2019 on the First Floor of the Frost Tower, and the panel is comprised of the following speakers and moderator.

  • Russell J. Handy, Aviation Director, City of San Antonio Aviation Department
  • Jeff Arndt, President & CEO, VIA Metropolitan Transit
  • Antonio Petrov, Founder, Urban Future Lab│Associate Professor of Architecture at UTSA
  • Shirley Gonzales, District 5 Councilwoman
  • Robert Rivard, Publisher, Rivard Report (Moderator)

The civic engagement organization ReadySAGo assembled the panel to discuss the future of mobility amid San Antonio’s rapid rise in population, as the area is expected to grow by more than 1 million residents by 2040. The growth of the city’s airport, our highway system, and the planned expansion of multiple transportation modes will all play a key role in San Antonio’s future and maintaining the city’s quality of life. Recent economic development announcements signal that the San Antonio-New Braunfels-San Marcos-Austin corridor is evolving into one giant, interdependent metropolis. In addition, a coalition of San Antonio and Austin state representatives are working to revive conversations on the possibility of passenger rail between Austin and San Antonio ahead of the 2021 legislative session. Do these developments provide a window of opportunity for San Antonio to push for ambitious mobility plans that also include the growth and prosperity of the San Antonio Airport? The panelists will discuss this and more.

Under the umbrella of transportation, infrastructure, urban design, and hybrid community engagement, culminating in what the Urban Future Lab refers to as “creative public-interest engineering,” the spectrum of Dr. Petrov’s projects ranges from large-scale urban interventions to publicly designed micro- and macro-parks. Dr. Petrov also serves as an invited transportation and planning partner of the San Antonio Airport’s Strategic Plan Working Group.
